What is changing for founders?

Anyone daring to jump from unemployment into self-employment faces a mountain of questions: Which legal form is the right one? How do I write a business plan? And above all: How do I finance it all? The good news: You don't have to overcome these hurdles alone. The state supports aspiring entrepreneurs through the Activation and Placement Voucher (AVGS).

What exactly is the AVGS?

Behind the abbreviation "AVGS MAT" lies the most powerful tool for founders in Germany. It is a document issued by the Employment Agency (Agentur für Arbeit) or the Jobcenter. The principle is simple: The voucher entitles you to visit a certified management consultancy (like Konzept Consulting).

We work with you to develop your business model and write the professional business plan together. The invoice for this consulting service does not go to you, but 100% to the agency.

Who is entitled to the funding?

• ALG I and II Recipients: If you receive unemployment benefit I or II and have been registered as unemployed for 6 weeks, you usually have a legal entitlement to the voucher and the subsequent Startup Grant or Entry Money.
• Bürgergeld Recipients: Here, the issuance of the voucher is at the discretion of your case worker. A well-prepared pitch of your idea is worth its weight in gold.

No AVGS? These alternatives exist (BPW & BAFA)

What happens if your case worker rejects the AVGS application or you are not entitled to it? Do not give up on your dream, as there are highly attractive alternatives to reduce costs. Important: However, always prefer the AVGS, as it covers 100% of the costs. If this is not possible, the following options apply:

1. The Economic Consulting Program NRW (BPW)

If you are planning your startup in North Rhine-Westphalia, you can use the BPW of the IHK and Chambers of Crafts. This program usually covers 50% of the consulting costs. If you are unemployed but have not received an AVGS, the funding can even be increased to up to 80% under certain conditions.

2. BAFA - Promotion of Entrepreneurial Know-how

Have you already registered your company? Then the AVGS no longer applies. For this case, there is the nationwide program of BAFA. Depending on the location, the state covers 50% of the costs for strategic management consulting.
